What is inside

• Roots. Roots hold the tree in the ground and drink water and minerals from the soil.
• Pipes (xylem & phloem). Two kinds of tiny pipes: xylem carries water up, phloem carries sugar down.
• Trunk & bark. Strong wood holds the tree up; bark protects it like skin.
• Branches. Branches spread the leaves out to catch as much sunlight as possible.
• Leaves. Leaves use sunlight to make sugar from air and water — and breathe out oxygen.
• Flowers, fruit & seeds. Flowers make seeds; mangoes wrap each seed in sweet fruit so animals carry it away.
• Friends underground. Fungus threads wrap around the roots, trading water and minerals for the tree’s sugar.
