What is inside

• Inside the Earth. A thin rocky crust, a thick hot mantle, and a metal core — liquid outside, solid inside.
• Tectonic plates. The crust is broken into huge plates that drift a few centimetres a year — and India is on one of them.
• Volcano. A crack where melted rock from deep down bursts out as lava, ash and gas.
• Earthquake. Rock that has been pushed too far suddenly snaps and slips, sending shaking waves through the ground.
• Ocean floor. The sea floor has shelves, deep trenches and a mountain chain longer than any on land.
